How did you get into banking?
My grandfather, Robert C. Walters, was President of the Millersburg Trust Company, which is now Mid Penn Bank. I wanted to follow in his footsteps and began my banking career in May of 1976.
What do you like most about working at Mid Penn Bank?
What I like most about working at Mid Penn Bank is our culture and team. We have a culture that focuses on supporting our team members and helping them succeed in their careers. This includes providing education and development opportunities to all employees. I also appreciate how we continue to emphasize building relationships and truly valuing people. Our president and CEO takes the time to get to know employees. From holiday tours to monthly events, Rory continues to invest time and effort into building a culture that values relationships and people.
What does Women’s History Month mean to you?
Throughout history, many women have broken down barriers and laid the groundwork for future generations to succeed. My idol was Anna Woodside, the first female board member of Mid Penn Bank. She was also a passionate philanthropist and a prominent member of the community. She paved the way for future women in leadership. Women’s History Month provides time to reflect and appreciate the women who worked tirelessly to break down barriers and create opportunities. To honor Anna Woodside and others before me, I continuously strive to create opportunities for women in leadership by providing advocacy, mentorship, and guidance.
What are major changes you have seen in the banking industry?
The banking industry has changed significantly since I began my career. Technology has transformed products, services, and how every department within the bank functions. There have been numerous additions to banking laws and regulations over the years as well.
One of the most noticeable changes in the banking industry, particularly related to Women’s History Month, is the increasing number of women in leadership roles. What was once a male-dominated industry is now seeing more women take on leadership positions and advance throughout the field.
What is something that has changed at Mid Penn Bank and what is something that has remained a constant over the years?
A major change I have seen throughout the years at Mid Penn Bank is our dedication to employee growth. In recent years, we have made significant investments in education and development opportunities for our employees. This commitment has led to the creation of an entire education department focused on providing resources and curriculum to help employees achieve long-term success.
One aspect of Mid Penn Bank that has remained unchanged throughout my nearly 50 years in banking is our commitment to personalized customer service. Even as we have grown and changed over the years, our team still takes the time to get to know our customers one-on-one and provide solutions that meet their needs. Whether it is greeting customers by name when they visit our local financial centers or having team members go the extra mile to provide Unwavering Service to customers daily, I take pride in knowing that we have stayed true to our community banking values in a constantly evolving industry.
